Just a Question

What exactly do you think Barack Obama is going to do as President of the United States if he is actually Anti-American or a terrorist or whatever? Is he going to call Bill Ayers and say “Hey – dude. I’m in. Let’s do this.” and the next thing you know, a bomb will blast through the White House: some plot that they hatched way back in the day when Obama ’started his political career in Ayers’ living room’?

No, I’m not asking if you think he is or not, but what do you think his motives would be and what could he actually accomplish?

I don’t know. But a little honest would be great. Ayers is CLEARLY not just some guy who lived down the street and did some bad stuff when Obama was 8.

I SO don’t care about Ayers. He’s a non-issue to me. The man was a Vietnam war protester. It was the Sixties, it was crazy times. We moved past it.

End of story.

I don’t think he’s anti-American. I think a lot of what he *wants* to do is perceived as such because we are a capitalist society. We work more hours than most people in the world, take fewer vacations, etc. We tend to be very attached to our money. I think what happened was people heard the “share the wealth” comment and see that as more “anti-American” than anything else, but not in the way that some seem to fear that his connections with the Annenberg foundation and the alleged afro-centrist goals would somehow be detrimental to the U.S. I guess there have been recent sound bites released that groups that benefited from Annenberg money were spouting off anti-white sentiment to the point of killing something like 25 million white people. I’ll have to look it up, but I heard about it yesterday on the radio.

There are huge concerns on the right of the US becoming akin to the European welfare state. They don’t want to see their hard-earned money go to support people who they think don’t want to get off their ass and work hard, themselves. It’s a very one-sided and narrow-minded view, but it is what it is, to them.

I’m not saying Ayers is a non-issue to me, he isn’t. His views and actions were extreme and some still are. But that was then and this is now.

Maria I think the right sees the fact that Obama really hasn’t been tested over time as a huge deficit. They equate it with it somehow meaning that what isn’t known must be bad, when in fact, they have no way of knowing either way. They see his inexperience as a potential threat to the safety and security of the U.S. And to some degree, I think they see his willingness to open talks with nations that are seen as hostile to the U.S. as anti-American.

What I said might not have made much sense, it just came off the top of my head.

Curious about this Annenberg reference. I work for an organization that the Annenberg foundation donates a lot of money to. I have never heard this business about groups that receive donations have been making racists (anti-white) statements. I wonder if they know that the founder Walter Annenberg was white, and that Wallis Annenberg the foundations current head honcho is also white, and a woman? Not to mention our organization is an international animal welfare organization. weird.
This is in no way an attack on what you said, I just read it and was shocked. Apparently I am really out of the loop!

Ditto what ‘Auds at Barking Mad’ said.

Many people are concerned that his “Change” is going to be unwanted change. I think we can all agree that some changes need to be made, but will his idea of change be right for America? I think the jury is still out.

I’m exhausted by this “guilt-by-association” thing the McCain campaign keeps hitting him with. Ayers, Reznik, Wright… it’s becoming tedious. The McCain supporters who keep spewing this stuff either don’t know or have forgotten some key names of their own: Keating, Diamond, Liddy, etc. And you know what? I LIKE that Obama’s campaign doesn’t mention that crap. I like that they don’t find it necessary to dredge up the past, because they’re busy talking about the future. In the end, if McCain loses, it won’t be because of the economy. Not really. It will be because he and his team played politics the old school way. Experience isn’t always a positive — sometimes it means you just end up doing the same broken things over and over again. Just ask Rumsfeld and Cheney.

I have always hated personal attack campaigns. To me it says that the other candidate doesn’t have enough to boost his/her own image, that they have to attack the other candidates. it’s more than stupid. I cannot wait for this circus to be over.

God forbid you’re running for president and you have some friends with sketchy pasts. I mean, we all know how UPSTANDING and perfect McCain is. Right? I mean, Vietnam vets all looove him. Right? No? Huh.
Whatever. I am also sick of it all.

Just a north of the 49th parallel observation… there are some wacky, wacky people with loud voices in the US. Seriously, a presidential candidate that made it all the way to the top of his party can honestly be considered Anti-American and a possible terrorist? Seriously? People believe that?

Okay, maybe his inexperience is a deficit, and Canadians are nervous about his protectionist strategies, but really, I’d always take that over the GOP option. Really, I would.

okay i am so glad you asked this question. i am so behind barack, but really, if he *was* a terrorist, i think the first thing he would do is march us *all* into a cave. then he would lock us in the cave, and invite all his terrorist friends to play poker in all our houses all day long with the music cranked up REALLY REALLY loud. and it would be music we didn’t like. you know, like christian rock.

then they would move all our figurines around to face in the direction that annoyed us the most.

then, when they were completely satisfied, they would let us all back into our homes, but not our original ones. we would have a kind-of “musical houses” thing where we had to just go into the first house we came to when the music stopped.

THAT is just the BEGINNING of the havoc i think that would be wreaked IFF i thought he were a terrorist.

but i get stuff wrong a lot. he might not actually be one.

is that about right?

Good question. I think that all of this name association crap is just that, crap. I think that what we have in front of us is the lesser of two evils. The lesser of the two evils is Obama. He has some great ideas. Will he get them done? I don’t know. Will he attack America? NO. There is no evil conspiracy at work here. My uncle is so blinded by the GOP, he forwards e-mails that make me soooo uncomfortable, but I don’t speak out to him because he is family. He was raised to be a bigot and a fool. I was not. I don’t buy into that shit. So I sit back and just hit the delete button. I think I got off track here, but thanks for the opportunity to blabber.

Hilarious. I hadn’t thought what his actual (imaginary) plan would be. Maybe change the weekend to be Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday forcing all Christians to have to work on their Sabbath.

Clearly, he’s going to wave his magical “The One” wand and turn our country into a socialist one, wiping all vestiges of democracy in one instant, because the President has absolute power that has no checks or balances in any way.
