“I want you to ask yourselves: were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising two kids? Were you in it for that young boy and his mom surviving on minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country that feel invisible?”
- Hilary Clinton, August 26, 2008 – Democratic National Convention
That’s WTF I’ve been asking your supporters that refuse to vote for anyone, or have vowed to shift for McCain out of spite. Thank you for putting the question to them yourself. Great speech. 75% of it was about you instead of Obama, but whatever! Still good!

I have nothing to add. You said it all.

I thought her speech was one of the best. She did what she was supposed to do for Obama, now it’s our turn. By which I mean VOTE!!
PS..itaggedyouforamemetoday *ducks and runs*

I haven’t seen it yet, but boy oh boy that spite thing really gets to me. I’ve heard she did very well.

I was quite proud of what she said. Because she is so right.

I am glad she did the right thing, even if I would have had a much tougher time convincing myself if her and Obama’s roles had been reversed *shudder*. Thankfully I don’t have to make that choice.

He’s had my vote the entire time. I loved Michelle’s speech and ignored her. I’ll watch tomorrow night! :)

Ignored *Clinton*, not *Michelle*. I need to learn to type.

That was, without question, the most selfless part of her speech, and if she had just worked that point for another 45 seconds, all would have been forgiven. She did not do what she was supposed to do — she did not tell her supporters that Obama is ready to lead. She did not hand over the baton in a graceful, supportive manner. She was begrudging at best. At the end of the primaries, I was starting to suspect she was a self-centered douchebag. Now I know she is.
Interesting that after watching Bill tonight, I feel compelled to vote for him all over again. DAMN, he was good.

I loved her speech. Maybe it’s up to us to get Obama in office?
Wish I had heard the speeches tonight, but I was going down a waterslide with my kids…

I felt the exact same way, Maria. I’ve never been a big Hillary fan, but she was awesome. I really loved the delegate voting yesterday and her request for acclamation. That was the coolest thing I’ve watched in a long time.
PS- It was I who originally nominated you for hotbloggercalendar. ;) (Although I’m sure others followed suit.) Yeah, I’m all about the taking credit for my accomplishments!
Yep. I guess it’s time to switch over. But damn, that speech made me wish she were the nominee.
yup

I know! I can’t believe people would vote for McCain b/c they were sour-graping over their candidate not getting the nomination. I mean, wtf is your problem??

Spite is so stupid. I stopped myself from doing something out of spite just this morning. It’s just so stupid!!
Word.
I’m soooo pissed that my work schedule’s gotten in the way of watching the DNC! :[
The latest from the other maria :)…Geez louise, just lemme work already!
What you said, Maria. Though I see Missives from Suburbia’s points — she could have outlined his qualifications a bit more, since ostensibly the convention is supposed to introduce & make the case for the nominee.
Still, some right fine speechifying.
Michelle Obama’s speech was amazing, too. I really don’t know which moved me more: her words, so passionately spoken, or the cut-away shots to the various Black women in the audience, watching her up there and slowly shaking their heads. Really.
All of this, ALL OF THIS, is about damn time.
Okay one last thing, the thing that made me think that (“About damn time.”). One of the last phrases in one of Michelle Obama’s speech was: “They believed, like I believe, that America should be a place where you can make it if you try.” And of course instantly the refrain from the Sly and the Family Stone tune popped in my head, like I’m sure she intended it to, and I thought, who the HELL have been the finest rhetoriticians in this country; who the HELL have been the ones to speak movingly about pain, and yet still inspire hope, etc.? Yeah: African America. And all this white consumption and use of brown culture, in the way of music in particular, seems so hollow, so exploitative, when it isn’t paired with REAL power sharing. Like, brown people telling us white people what to do how ’bout. Like, a brown man running my mother fucking country how ’bout.
Okay well okay. Sorry about the profanity on your fine website.

Okay, one REALLY last thing: Katha Pollitt on Michelle Obama’s speech. Who doesn’t heart Michelle Obama?

I missed the whole thing: no tv. But have read a bunch online this morning ( am still a junky, my media is just different!) and have to say good for her.

If we could vote a president in for life, Bill Clinton would be at the helm.
Who cares who gave him a blowjob for crying outloud??
Truth be told, Obama inspired me tonight.
That was a great speech.

It was better than I expected, but god lord can that women be any more egocentric. If she really wants to support women, she should have had 100% of her speech be about the candidate that will do the most to move us forward. And, that is Obama.
The latest from conversemomma…I Will Shelter You As Long As I Can
Amen, sister. It’s just embarrassing that so many seemingly intelligent people are having your basic temper tantrum because their candidate didn’t get the nomination. Yeah, I think it would have been a teensy bit better if she’d got it. So what? She didn’t get it! It’s time to get behind Obama. End of story. Don’t get me wrong – I have a good friend who was totally in favor of Hillary and is now “undecided.” But in her case she’s concerned about the “lack of experience” meme that’s going around. That’s her thing. I don’t agree with it, but at least it’s not sour grapes.
