About the 'new' Dora: STFU

New DoraMy head is about to pop off. Currently, it’s as swollen as the original Dora’s big ass cabeza. Moms are all in a friggin’ tizzy over a SHADOW. A fucking silhouette. Seriously folks?! Can we wait and see if she looks like a Bratz doll before we throw a fit? This is totally premature. It seems like people just want to claim FIRST?! in attacking what they don’t know anything about. Calm down folks! Can we reserve judgment after we see what she actually looks like?

I also find the simultaneous uproar over the Tattoo Barbie to be amusing. It’s bad for Barbies to come with toy tattoo machines and stickers because it gives girls the ‘wrong message’ (that they can be successful artists for a living, gorgeous with ink, or break the mold as to what’s ok for girls to do?). I’d go into detail, but Maria basically already took care of it. What I don’t get is that it’s also bad for Dora to embody everything that they would say is in opposite of that? What am I missing?

Dora does not look the slightest bit inappropriate. Not. one. bit. She looks older. Which is the point of this!! This is not the new Dora The Explorer, that will be playing on Nick Jr. at 9am. This Dora is not geared towards preschoolers. She’s. not. a. baby. anymore. Inappropriate would be an 8 year old in orange shorts and ruffled yellow socks. I’m just sayin’… This is what children wear. You wouldn’t be hard pressed to walk into an elementary school and find a classroom full of little girls in cute outfits, not dissimilar to what this new Dora looks to be wearing.

What’s wrong with her clothes? Nothing. Not a damn thing. There’s no sex appeal. Just because she’s shaped like an actual child and not a basketball, she’s ’sexed up’? Pfft.

People act like it’s bad for girls to be interested in fashion, clothing, girly things. Now if you know me, you know that I am totally against shoving stereotypes down the throats of my daughters. I get a little tickle of elation every time they go for the primary colored toy over the pink, and want the action figure over the doll. I do not allow Bratz or those ‘My Style’ Barbies in my house. But there is nothing wrong with young girls liking to look good, as long as that doesn’t include exposing their navel, wearing eyeshadow or stilettos, give or take some sluttiness.

The Bella is quite the teeny fashionista. She chooses her own clothes when we go shopping (with my input, of course) and picks out her own clothes every morning. She has her own sense of style, makes adventurous choices and does the damn thing. I love it. Ask her what she wants for any holiday or birthday? To go shopping for clothes. A new pair of shoes. The child has more in her closet than I ever did. This is something she’s into, and I’m more than happy to encourage it. I style her hair the way she requests as long as time allows, and laugh watching her play stylist to her little sister. It’s her thing. Why is that bad? Oh right! It ain’t.

Bella

I asked her if she liked the new older Dora’s shadow. She said yes, and I asked her what she liked. Her reply? “I like that she has long hair like me. I like her skirt, and she has on leggings like I wear with my skirts.  And I have shoes like that! but with no bows” I asked her if she liked what the old Dora was wearing. “No, she wore bad colors. And I didn’t like her hair.” Y’all know Dora had bad hair. A fucking bowl cut does not work for Latin people. We have thick hair. They should have known better.

I guess what I’m saying is that people are either putting the cart before the horse, getting their facts mixed up with general assumptions or just looking for an opportunity to bitch. Dora isn’t sexy. She’s just growing up – which guess what folks? All kids do.

I liked this post a lot. I hope you’re right that there’s nothing worth getting our panties all bunched up about. Also I really value your opinion since you have daughters. (WHO ARE SO CUTE.) A lot of what I bitch about is kind of uber theoretical since I’m raising boys. (S LOVES Dora though.)

New Dora looks like she has big hair. You know big hair equals hussy.

PS – The Bella dresses better than I do.

I would like to know where that monkey got those damn boots from, and why didn’t he steal pants and a shirt if he was planning on wearing those boots. That is all…

I’m wondering why Dora is wearing Irish Step Dancing shoes. She really is eclectic!

I love that your daughter dresses herself and cares. Missy B is 9, she doesn’t give a good god damned what she is wearing. As for now, muy bueno for me because I love dressing her age appropriately. I fear in a few short years she will want to look like her peers. But for now, she doesn’t give a shit if her clothes come from Gymboree or Walmart.

While I’m not PISSED, per se, I am a little sad because current Dora is one of the few female characters that my son relates to, and an older Dora will likely lose some of that cross-gender appeal. I hope not, but I worry.

I think it’s about damned time that they let a cartoon character grow up. Tommy Pickles was cute and all but being one year old for sixteen years is pretty fucked up.

But, I’m with holding judgment until I see the “real” picture because, honestly? That skirt is a little short if she isn’t wearing leggings underneath. Not really practical for climbing mountains and jumping over rivers, ya know? (That is what Dora does, right? I’ve never watched a full episode.)

@Sheila: You’re exactly right – if she’s *not* wearing leggings under that, and it’s just a conveniently misplaced pixel on the silhouette – that skirt is way too short.

Awesome post! Totally agree! And Bratz dolls are hood rats, won’t be allowed in my house either! Dora with some real hair, fine! AND if my son wants the damn Dora doll he can have it! I’m tired of people telling my son he can’t have something because “it’s for a girl.” I’ve never said it, but somehow my mom managed to make a three year old scared of everything pink. Way to go.

BTW I had that stupid haircut that Dora has when I was a kid, my husband calls me an oompa-loompa whenever he sees the pictures. Dumb h/c!

What I didn’t get about the old Dora was she didn’t seem old enough to go on so many adventures without an adult! But Riley was a big fan, and she’s already more independent and able to entertain herself than Sylvia. So maybe there’s some merit in it.
A little off-topic, I know, but if we’re talking about values we’re learning from cartoon characters, I thought I’d throw it out there.

Yeah. Comments.

I love that little girls are fashionistas at this age. Do you know why? Because at this point they are following their hearts. It’s so creative. They might not always follow their hearts and choose to conform to whatever or whomever later on in life. That is when I will start having problems.

Yeah, honestly, Dora’s fucked up color combo’s of the past always got on my last nerve. I was all, “Seriously? She’s a cartoon, making her look good is like no big shit, right?”

Of course, I like Barbie too. Like that shit isn’t obvious.

TOTALLY AGREE! i mean lets be serious here its a freakin cartoon. My daughter loves DORA!!!! she is a fanatic. i am glad they are letting her grow up. I hate that cartoons always stay the same. let kids grow up with their favorite characters. For the ppl who are upset about what she wears; who lets their child dress themselves like a cartoon anyway. Way to go for Bella having her own personal style! :)

I like the old Dora because Maya does. and if Maya likes the new one, I’ll probably like that one too. *shrug*

as far as the barbies. Tattoos rock. Barbie blows. that is all :D

Do I live under a rock? I had no idea that there was a new Dora. I’ll love her as long as she quits encouraging my kids to yell in the house. “Say-ay i-it louder!” needs to go away.

My kids are so much more fashionable than I am. They pick out their own clothes, although I reserve the veto for weather-inappropriate clothing.

I hadn’t heard about this until I read your post, then I looked up a few things. For freak’s sake people. How can anyone even be getting upset about a stinking shadow? You can’t even tell what she is wearing! Sigh… Ridiculous.

Yup! Just a shadow with a cute outfit. I am completely outta the loop. So, folks are thinking the “shadow” is going to ruin childhood innocence? Interesting. Like you said, Dora is growing up. I think that is a cool idea. Hell, in the time that we’ve known her, she’s taken every adventure imaginable, has gained twin siblings, hangs out with a couple of cousins, so why not show that progression through age? The Rugrats didn’t remain babies forever!!

The whole Tattoo Barbie thing is interesting too. I remember when I was a kid they released a tattoo barbie, but then took her off the market because I guess folks were pissing on themselves in outrage. Hummmm… I wonder if they still have the pregnant barbie on the market? Lol

I’m very much of the opinion that if you don’t like it, don’t let your kid watch it, but please don’t bitch and bore me with it.
